In the United States, an international student or temporary immigrant must have a work permit in order to be able to hold a job. If this is your case, you may have already initiated the request. Here is how to monitor the progress of your case.
Log into your account if you have applied online
The most convenient way to apply for a work permit in the United States is to submit the application online. This allows you to monitor the progress of your case. To do this, you must log into your account on the USCIS site. Click on “Case history” to access the latest updates regarding your status.
Note that it is possible to track any request for immigration documents to the USA through this site. In addition to the Employment Authorization Document (EAD), this concerns both visas and the green card.
Use your receipt number if you haven’t applied online
If you haven’t applied for a work permit online, then you haven’t created an account on the USCIS site. In this case, you will need to use the number on the receipt sent by the agency which proves that your request has been accepted.
This is a series of 13 characters that you will find at the top of the page of the notice. The first three characters are letters while the last ten are numbers. Simply enter this number on the USCIS website to check the status of your request.
You can choose to send notifications by email or SMS
To avoid consulting your file on the site all the time, you have the option of choosing to be notified in the event of an update either by email or by telephone. Attention, carefully read the terms and conditions of this option before validating it.
You will be asked to enter your name, receipt number, email address, and phone number. Then, you can decide to receive your notifications by SMS or email. They will then be sent to you when your file has been accepted and processed.
Send a request if your file has been pending for more than 75 days
In principle, it does not take more than 75 days to get a response to your work permit application. If at the end of this period, your case is still pending, you can still submit a request through the USCIS site by clicking on “Case Outside Normal Processing Time”.
You will need to provide your receipt number, the date you made the request, your address, and other information needed to confirm your identity.
What if a receipt has not been sent to you?
You did not apply for your permit online and did not get a receipt confirming receipt of your file? You cannot check your status on the USCIS site.
Perhaps you sent your request to the wrong government address. You will then only have to start the process from the beginning, taking great care this time to enter the correct address.
